libraries on linux systems have changed such that the licenses downloaded for
the current 7.X
releases,https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/fswiki/rel7downloads- cannot work
with 5.X.

I've downloaded Freesurfer version 5.3 and signed up for a license. However,
when I try to run the example:
mri_convert sample-001.mgz sample-001.nii.gz
I get the following error:

Usually it would be /usr/local/freesurfer
If thats what you did than you may need root access to the machine to be
able to do that. So basically create the license.txt file in your home
directory than copy it to the frresurfer folder:
sudo cp license.txt /usr/local/freesurfer/
Bottom line is
i received the license through the email and tried to make a new text file
contains the emailed licensed details .. i am confused where exactly to save it
i tried to save it in the user/local/freesurfer but it show a permission error

OpenSuse 12.3. 64 bit.

did you setenv FREESURFER_HOME to the right place? If so, did you do:
source $FREESURFER_HOME/FreeSurferEnv.csh
? That should setup the paths. The .license file is in $FREESURFER_HOME
(which is where you installed freesurfer)

should work for you regardless of operating system, but if not just email
