It's missing from Mac version of the built v5.3.0.
I just checked the Linux version for the same built and it is there.
Is the one you sent compiled for Mac?
Also, I would really appreciate if you could kindly comment on my second
question.

the ascii format is pretty barebones and doesn't have e.g. ras2vox info
that freeview uses to display the surfaces properly. It's for ease of
conversion and such.
