I had the exact same problem
on x64 Ubuntu with both 32-bit and 64-bit FS distros. After installing the
most recent nVidia graphics driver, either distribution works
fine.

I have been using FreeSurfer on Dell Linux computer (64 bit) with Fedore
Core 4 by downloading
[freesurfer-Linux-centos4_x86_64-stable-pub-v3.0.1-full] and had no
problems.
Recently our lab changed Linux distribution from Fedore Core 4 to 5 and
I got the following message when I ran
