This is not only a problem with Descent. Such problem exists with other
installers running under FreeDOS kernel too. For example, you can't install
MS Network Client for DOS and, if I remember correctly, GalaxyWrite too, when
running under FreeDOS kernel.

I had the same problem half a year ago or more before emm386 was fixed up
to work with Descent. I haven't tried installing it since, but I had to
install it then through Win ME.

How about posting information from your config.sys and autoexec.bat file
showing what driver and extender you are using and the settings for them?

When I run the Descent installer (from the CD) under
