About the screen problem:
I don't know that model, but in earlier laptops, text mode wouldn't
fill the whole screen (pixels weren't "expanded"), and that may be the
reason of your problem.
Under Linux, many "text modes" are actually graphic modes
(framebuffers and such), and not pure BIOS text
Oops, that is what I was looking for, Eric. Did anyone in the list had
the chance to give a try too?
Sounds like a good candidate for another BASIC tool...

Hello guys,
It seems we have available a new open source BASIC tool
(interpreter?). I would like to know if any of you could give some
feedback on it, try it (maybe compare with other BASIC tools), as I am
not very familiar with BASIC tools nowadays.
I'll be looking for your comments.
