USB devices fail to attach as umass scsi da[n]

This dictation recorder fails to attach via usb. The same problem occurs with a Nikon Coolpix L1. Both work fine under windows on the same hardware. Do I need to do something to GENERIC to get this working? The machine is spare so I can recompile and submit debug info as need be. Thanks. GENERIC,
