i hvae just noticed that if /usr/src/contrib/sendmail/cf/mailer/local.m4 has
a line that says
ifdef(`LOCAL_MAILER_PATH',, `define(`LOCAL_MAILER_PATH', /bin/mail)')
will result in error at boot time. i simply change that line to
ifdef(`LOCAL_MAILER_PATH',, `define(`LOCAL_MAILER_PATH',
