It’s been a while since I last dealt with serial devices. Apparently, when
passing through a serial device on the host to a COM port in the VM, CTS/RTS
are not (correctly) passed through. With
set ctsrts off
in ppp.conf I could get ppp to dial successfully.

I’m trying to access a Huawei USB LTE stick from a Bhyve VM like so:
# cat /var/vm/mgmt/mgmt.conf
loader="bhyveload"
cpu=1
memory=256M
network0_type="virtio-net"
network0_switch="lan"
disk0_type="virtio-blk"
disk0_name="disk0"
disk0_dev="sparse-zvol"
