FWIW, I just upgraded the machine[1] to FreeBSD 11.1-release-p6 via
freebsd-update and the "reboot-on-verbose-boot" problem is no longer there.
Now both normal and verbose dmesg output can be found on the FreeBSD page[2]
for this machine.
