upgraded to check and all is still fine:

I'm on 6.1PreRelease and this works:
strings -n 3 /boot/kernel/kernel | grep -v | sed -n 's/^___//p'
There was a minor tweek in this line back in 5.X transition form 4.X but my
script works fine for 6.X since then.

I lost the previous thread on the psm0 lock but also wanted to report that after
cvsup-ing for the arp patch and rebuilding that the lockup still occurs, any
leads on a fix/workaround? (Besides removing psm0 or disabling the sound card).

Even more odd I made a boot CD of 4.5-20020322-STABLE and I was able to
boot from my IDE CD-ROM but then after I configured all the install settings I
picked DVC/CD-ROM as the install media and I got "CD-ROM not recongnized"?
It obviously can see it as it booted up the CD to begin with, odd thing
I'm having the same toubles with freetype2-2.0.3_1 which is actually at 2.0.4 in
the packages ftp sites (and mirrors). In fact Mesa-3.4.2_1 also has the same
hangup, but I'm not sure if its in its required list.
Somehow I think this points back to the older problem with the INDEX file in
the port
