propably you need to adjust the line speed, i.e. cu -l -s 19200,
also some devices like if you hit enter to get a login prompt.

I configured Microtek ScanMaker3600 succesfully under 5.3-Release. So
far, so good.
In between, I upgraded to -stable and suddenly had to notice that when
starting the prescan, the bulb isn't moving but keeps kind of knocking
at the front of the case.
The scanner uses the sm3600 sane-back
EVERYBODY: Could you please check if you have a rl(4) driven NIC and check if
you experienced a speed degradation as well. Please let me know either way
with information about the chipset on your NIC. Thanks!
