Sorry then, probably my guess was wrong, but there's still a chance that it
was actually rerunning 'mergemaster' that fixed my system. :) As I did a major
upgrade, 'make delete-old-libs' did a lot of work for me (too much to
memorize).

I had the exact same problem after I upgraded to 7.0-BETA2, and the problem
seemed to be that I forgot to `make delete-old' and `make delete-old-libs'.

I don't know where it could be set to use a serial console, I can only tell
that I used a GENERIC kernel configuration with the addition of `device
atapicam', and I have no /boot.config file.
