Hi experts,
Due to the recent security issue regarding openssl, I have to update a
server running 6_release. I was wondering if updating using binaries
using the freebsd-update utility is a viable alternative to recompiling
the world. What would you recommend?

Thanks, also to all others who answered this question.
I found out that setting 'set loginterface ' in pf.conf makes it
possible to get transfer statistics from pfctl -si. Maybe it is of
interest for other beginners like me.

I am trying to install phpmyadmin 2.9.0.3 from ports. Although
php5-5.1.6 + extensions is installed, the script tries to install
php5-5.2.0. How can one avoid this? I don't see an option in the Makefile.
thanks i.a. for any comment,

reesbie, but I can imagine that these are already working in that direction. (I am using FreeBSD-current as a desktop OS on a laptop, but it required some days of tweaking to get sound, touchpad & usb mouse, 1280x800 resolution and wireless networking running.)

Thanks,
I had caught that one but is there anything else I should do for the sake of
security?

You could use a server like pureftpd with virtual users.
In that case you don't even need to have shell users for ftp access.

Dear list,
I would like to configure a monthly report of the incoming and
outgoing amount of traffic on the network interface of my server, for
instance in the monthly run output.
Can I do this with a built in program of FreeBSD 6.0 or do I need a port?
Niek
find this in the handbook. There is no /etc/useradd.conf
neither an /etc/pw.conf on my system and also the contents of
/usr/share/skel do not seem to make a difference.
Many thanks i.a.

Hi Lowell, thanks for the clarification. I'll have a look at the adduser
script and probably make my own version.

Thanks to all who answered. Of course, knowing this now, I just up

Dear,
Personally, I would omit the last sentence from your help request.
That would certainly help you in receiving helpful and friendly
replies. As you state it, it sounds a bit rude.
the Installation process? I need HELP NOW !!!

I'm running FreeBSD 6-STABLE as guest in the free VMWare Player on a
WinXP host.
How can I switch between virtual terminals? Ctrl-Alt-F[n] doesn't work...
By the way, is this the right mailing list to place this question?
Thank you,

One has to press Ctrl-Alt-Space and subsequently (while still holding Ctrl and
Alt) the desired F-key.
Thanks for the reactions,
Niek
