The culprit is the first path. It results in non-standard linux

This works for me: Edit -> Prefernces -> Applications -> PDF:
preview in Firefox. As well as other viewer (mupdf tested).
My current Firefox version is 22.0 though. But I recall it
working at previous firefox versions.

Just a note: you can't mix FreeBSD and linux libraries at one
application. Those processes may interact via stdin/stdout, sockets

Are you sure that your network card adapter is not supported? Did you
ask (if you run -stable) at the freebsd-stable@ about this network
card?
To answer your question. The default (GENERIC) kernel should use i386
binaries, can&
agnostics. I even can't understand your "it doesn't build on
amd64". Did you give it a try (to install from the port)? Have you got
any error messages? Does your sound card work with FreeBSD
applications? Which version of FreeBSD do you run?

etc), linuxulator will make the right thing to find needed
libraries.
3. Delete the definition of LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
