pkgdb worked like a charm. i had been using the -fu option
in a more conservative manner, but now it looks like it's

Perhaps the problem is that one or more of the pkg's doesn't have a
+COMMENT file at all. Try this:
# cd /var/db/pkg
# find . -type d -mindepth 1 -pr
