I used to have issues with portupgrade as well. I traced my problem to using the wrong portupgrade. I have been using portupgrade for several months without an issue ( except the Xorg 7 transition ). Make sure to use /usr/ports/ports-mgmt/portupgrade and not /usr/ports/sysutils/portupgra
