My question is a general one, with the following specific example. I wanted to re-compile the latest phpmyadmin but when I tried that, I get a "you must have the latest php5" (5.4.6) when I try php5 I get a dependency of devel/pkgconf when I compile pkgconf, it conflicts with devel/pkg-config

I elected to do a complete re-install of an 8.3 server, and kde4 fails because of dependencies: x11/kde4 depends on: misc/kdeedu4 which depends on: japanese/kiten WHICH FAILS Is there a way to have kde4 -not- use and therefore not depend on kdeedu4 ? Or not have kdeedu4 depend on kiten?

cmake build failure depending on liblzma

I'm attempting a re-install of 10.1 amd, and cmake is a show stopper, appearing to have a problem with liblzma. I re-installed liblzma, yet cmake continues to fail. Without cmake many other things such as mysql fail because of the dependency on cmake. I am not sure what to do. Any help would be
