I've been using the Brother HL1850 with CUPS for the last 4-5 Years.
It came with the ppd on the CD and cranks out 10-20 pages/min
5-10 in duplex mode.
All this time it's been running off the parallel port. The hl1870 has a nic.
The only time things get a bit slow is when you throw heavy graphics

Based on a quick look at the pips ports, the RX680 is not currently
supported. I suspect it wouldn't be terribly difficult to get running.
