okay, please ignore my previous post...
i sniffed around and found out that the ppp process was kill(TERM)'ed by
pptp itself. wondering why this happened led to this conclusion:

i've been trying to set up a pptp tunnel for more than one week now and
i wonder why this doesn't work:
pptp 129.187.10.28 pptp
returns after some seconds. the log indicates the termination of ppp,
but why does it terminate? pitty i don't have the server logs
