i've had similar problem with an old 3com nic two days ago - ping worked
in simplex mode(can see me, but i can't see a thing).
try
ifconfig xl0 media 100BaseTX mediaopt full-duplex
or
ifconfig xl0 media auto
also, sometimes after power failure switch goes mad (some cheap
trendnet) - then i must do
