You may also want to look at CARP from OpenBSD.

Also, http://pf4freebsd.love2party.net/carp.html is a FreeBSD port of CARP,
but the DNS entry does not seem to exist any longer

Only fxp box actually can use the fail-over ips. The backup box cannot
use them if we start
