you should check the settings of your switch ports and look into the output of 'ifconfig -a'. try nailing the switch to 100baseTX.full duplex and set up the network card with 'ifconfig fxp0 media 100baseTX mediaopt full-duplex' this solves carrier transition problems with stupid switch hardware wh
