Dave,
one last note. Be sure to copy your dmesg output when modifying
the controller mode and driver as this may indicate how the chip presents
itself to the kernel and provide hints if a patch is needed.

I'm getting that same exact error with an onboard Promise 20378 (on an Asus
P4C800). I sent a message about it to this list on Saturday but have received
no acknowledgements yet. Maybe if the two of us are having the same problem
we'll have better luck.
