By "early" I meant the cpu and mainboard were bought as soon as K7's
showed up in the OEM channel.

Are there any known issues with MTRR on early K7's? Using XFree86 4.0.x
on an early 550 Mhz K7 (equipped with 256Megs of sdram) causes this
machine to lock up, unless I comment out the K7 mtrr enabling stuff in
i686_mem.c. This happens with any VGA card that I drop in the box, (PCI
bus voodoo4,
I'm playing with a third party kernel module under 4.0.
Occasionally the box locks up during extended access to the device it
supports, though the box will respond to pings and other hardware driven
interupts, but will not let loggins happen, and open telnet sessions from
remote hosts freeze. I'
I have some very short term access to a Compaq 8500. The integrated raid
array is supported under linux via it's smart array driver. I have a
feeling that it should just work with freesd's driver, but "scanpci" shows
it using a a vendor id of 0x1000 and a device id of 0x0010. Where in a
