Schedgraphing over a prolonged period of time?

I was wondering if anyone knew architecturally and fundamentally why bsd's ifconfig can display active state information regarding the physical medium and why linux ifconfig cant? Not to start any trolling on which is superior, just curious about the difference. - Julio __
