Thanks. That changes things a bit for me. I'll try updating
my sources again (they're only 3 days old, but who knows?) build
a new kernel, and re-install the port.
This is the sort of report I needed; thanks.

A good suggestion.

I will try that ASAP, thanks.
(I have compiled the port with and without acpi support,
e. I have currently re-installed the multimedia/libvdpau
files.
Anyone know which is correct, or why the nvidia-driver port does
not explain?
Note: the "hastd" problem has been fixed in stable, but now the
"jme" module fails to compile.

I have a couple of suggestions which may help you with what you are
trying to do.
First, though, I can confirm that Unix character special tape
drivers since at least V7 have always ignored seeks. They happily
return the requested offset without feeling the need to actually
*do*
nd min values of short, long, int, float, etc.
along with various sizes and alignments.

I can't think of anything else right now that would be needed.

t may also be smart to dump more frequently than
otherwise called for, just to increase the odds.
Your message reminds us of the risks we take.
It is worth noting that "activity" can be occurring on a filestystem
and dump will succeed if there is no activity which alters inodes
significantly between passes.

up with.
In the meantime, this patch seems unlikely to slam my CPU up against the
wall, so I'll keep running it.
It would be nice to see a permanent fix go in soon, though...I'd *really*
hate to see another "Linux is faster than FreeBSD" thread here.
And, BTW, "thanks" to Andrew Gordon for the patch (it's just what I wanted
for Christmas).

d a bit specifically for this distribution,
but is not well tested. In addition, the absence of function
support leaves the 'csh' implementation with fewer features and
*much* less error checking. Nonetheless, if you are a diehard
(t)csh user, you may find this distribution useful.
