I still don't understand all the details but I do understand enough
to realize that I don't want to understand any more.
Thanks to all of you who responded to my question.

There is no __sys_open() in libc. Am I dealing with
C-compiler magic? Secret macro instructions invoking
undocumented gnu C-compiler asm() features? A CIA plot?
Is any of this low level structure documented anywhere?

It seems that the feature is now so widely spread throughout the BSD
community that is way too late to get the blemish fixed now.
I will have to settle for finding some comfort in the realization
that I have far bigger problems than the inability to use the
directory nam
within the makefile. Setting .OBJDIR or MAKEOBJDIR within the
makefile does not work. Placing a "cd .." or "cd $(.CURDIR)" in front of
every set of makefile shell commands is unthinkable.

This feature is not mentioned in the pmake tutorial found in
/usr/share/doc/psd/12.make. Is it a FreeBSD-ism?

My motherboard is a Gigabyte 8KNXP and the BIOS is an AWARD BIOS,

I have used it to install FreeBSD several times and caused hours of
continuous disk activity building ports and running miscellaneous programs.
I have noticed no hiccups.

verify that my understanding of the problem is probably correct?
Can someone suggest a workaround?
I don't have the option of installing the different operating systems
on different disks and I can't get the AWARD BIOS fixed.

Can anyone suggest a more likely reason for my wine failures?
I guess I could just wait for release 5.2 and see if the problem goes
away.
