I had some trouble bootin FreeBSD on my macbook pro last year. It seems
that you have to boot FreeBSD in BIOS mode (UEFI bootloader is not
available yet on amd64) and this can only be achieved on the SATA hard
drive (not an external one).

The prefered way would be to run a buildworld (make buildworld) which will
build all apps on /usr/src/ except the kernel itself. Then if you modify
any app, the make will only rebuild your modified binary.
Then make installworld will install all the apps at the correct place.

A little more information in that subject, rebooting from the FreeBSD
bootloader doesn't work on VirtualBox either (version 4.2). It juste enter
an infinite loop without any error message (Grub does reboot).
