Has anyone looked into pr i386/54781? It sounds very similar, and it
doesn't happen only on intel laptops. It also happens on my athlon laptop.

What stance is being taken regarding moving to the gcc 3.2 release for the
current branch given that 3.2 produces far better code than previous
releases.
