Or something between the PCIe eSata controller and the motherboard, but I have
no way to verify that as removal and reinsertion doesn't seem to prevent
whatever the problem was/is.

Apparently, the problems reported stemmed from a failing StartTech PEXESAT322I
controller. First one drive then the second. The affected drives have been

After going through multiple PCIe SATA/eSata cards, and a motherboard BIOS

Removed and re-inserted SATA PCIe card. Re-attached external SATA cables.
Booted into FBSD-12.4
Turned on one eSata external enclosure: ahcich errors appeared (despite what
was reported before)
