It is better with it set to eg 10, but it still occasionally gets stuck.

Hm, you're probably right in that's hardware's fault; I've never used this
touchpad under any other operating system so I don't know how it'd behave
there.

The interest on having this working on sh is because it's the default root
shell in FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE onwards. And according to its man page and to my
best understanding of it the thing should work

I also have a couple of FreeBSD 13.2-RELEASE-p9 running servers with UEFI boot
and Dual Console (video & serial) that refuse to reboot.
Unless I have an IPMI Serial Console session active/connected.
