Thanks for the idea. I'll try digging into the driver and upping the threshold. It's a Microsoft Fingerprint Reader, which uses the uru4000 driver in libfprint. lsusb reports it like this: Bus 003 Device 009: ID 045e:00bd Microsoft Corp. Fingerprint Reader Here's a picture: http://canta.ucsd.
