The -- works on logical values, changing them from True to 1, or from False to 0
Try putting 5 into Cell A1
Then put =(A1=5) into Cell A2
When you hit Enter, Cell A2 will read TRUE
If you change A1 to something else, Cell A2 will read FALSE
Now change Cell A2 to =--(A1=5)
When you hit

YOu can try the following if it is not protected:
Under Tools | Options | View Tab
Check the radio button selection for Objects. Change from "Hide All" to
