Same annoying thing happening here, I'm using evolution 2.10.1 on Ubuntu
7.04 (I had the same problema with Evo 2.8.X on Ubuntu 6.10).
There are days in which I have to force-shutdown and restart evolution a

I see the same thing and I don't use GAL (in fact I don't use Exchange).
It happens to me with an LDAP server. I believe the 3-character
threshold is simply because Evo waits for the third character before
attempting a lookup.
