I had exactly the same symptoms as you after moving to gnome-3 (I do use
gnome-shell) including an upgrade of evolution.
Also got messages saying evolution was offline, suspected networkmanager
(because that is now less used), and just waited a lot because the silly
cancel butt

I followed instructions from [1] and setup my evolution to talk to
Yahoo! with IMAP (not IMAP+) in 3.5.1 and it works. I also instruct

account, both free and both POP3. I guess there's differences between
countries.

Usually I solve this kind of issue setting the "Network Preferences"
(of Evolution) to "Directly connect to Internet".
