Hi,
This is all getting a bit techy for me at my present level of
knowledge.
As all I want is a system on which to store the backup "off" the machine
and as I have that with the USB stick I think that's where I'll leave
it there for the time being until learn more.

usable as they are essentially binary files

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic koala ) and Evolution 2.28.1.
I can go to File > Backup settings and create >>evolution-backup.tar.gz.
