That solved it. In Calendar, "Show:" was set to "Waiting". I don't know
how that happened.

uninstalling evolution many times but this
doesn't seem to work.
Can anyone suggest how to completely uninstall evolution and associated
files and then re-install. I suspect it will be ok if I can accomplish
this.

simply use the GTK theme selection color on selected items? Maybe some sort
of gtkrc setting?

I am running evolution 2.4.1 on ubuntu and i am unable to use the calendar.
