[Elecraft] K3 Power Issues

2024-09-01 Thread Corky
I was having trouble with my P3 going into brownout mode when transmitting 50 Watt digital. This used to be fine, but seems to have been getting worse over the past several months. When I monitored the power on the front panel of the K3 I found it was dropping about 1.5 V when transmitting digit

[Elecraft] Carrying Case

Shockingly bad grammar, from a supposedly educated person: " I use an old Zero case for my K3, only because I found it orphaned." You probably guessed that the case was orphaned, not the K3. Good thing my English teachers have been dead for decades. Wilson W4BOH

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shuts Down

2024-09-01 Thread Bob McGraw
I find running at reduced power may not indeed save anything.  It is just a "feel good issue" issue augmented by "old ham lore". My K3S running 100 watts on 10M is 43% efficient.  That is 14.0 volts at 16.5 amps for 231 watts total DC input. While running 50 watts it is only 31% efficient.

Corky, If you can adjust the power supply output, set it to 14.3 volts and see if the problems go away. Measure at the K3, not at the power supply. Eliminate your power distribution system and connect the K3/P3 direct to the power supply. Let us know if that helps. 73, Don W3FPR On 9/1/202

The actual wording is “This is the sort of nonsense up with which I will not put”. It’s often attributed to Winston Churchill but there’s some debate about that. A lot of the modern bad grammar, I put down to the current media. TV announcers in particular who are supposed to be educated but ins

I will also be posting this to the Win4K3Suite reflector, but I wanted to touch all bases. The other night, while doing some FT8 operating, I changed bands to 80m. I've operated on 80 plenty of times with this setup. The antenna connected is a Comet CHA-250b vertical, and is resonant on all bands

[Elecraft] K3 shuts down

2024-09-01 Thread Bob McGraw
On many many occasions I have found DC Power Strips to be the fault of many issues.  Poor voltage regulation due to added resistance in the path is the primary one.  Yes, every connection and contact adds resistance.    For this reason, I've always practiced and written, one must connect the ra
