Same issue for me on my Thinkpad W530. After the upgrade from 14.04 to
14.10 the PC was working with the Intel integrated graphics card but not
with the discrete Nvidia one (as usual after any kernel update...). When
reinstalling the Nvidia drivers the problem appeared. Subsequently, I
can login gr
I worked out that it happens to a window depending on its position in a
dual-monitor setup - attached is a video demonstrating the problem.

I just have had that bug, with volume up and down keys no longer working
after changing some shortcuts through "system parameters → keyboard →
shortcuts tab"
Solved by :
gsettings reset org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys volume-down

I'm associating unity-services because it appears (from inspecting
running processes) that unity-panel-service is the thing that is
failing. However I would not be surprised to find it's really a bug in
compiz, or the NVidia driver.
Need guidance on what to do next to debug.

Follow to my earlier comment (#10):
- Windows move after screen lock + time. (Just screen lock isn't
enough.) It's possible that screen blanking is the trigger.
- Seems to only affect gnome-terminal. This may be because I always keep
it in the lower left corner (by manual snapping).
- Ubuntu 14.
