FWIW, I can no longer reproduce this behaviour. I've survived several
days of suspend/resume cycles while using an external display. Instead
I'm seeing the double lock behaviour (unity + gnome screensaver).

not be related; but simply allowing the screen to timeout lock is not
sufficient for me to reproduce, nor is plugging/unplugging an external
display. Suspend/resume seems to be the trigger.
