If you find top panel missing icons and/or menu-in-window-header missing, try
following command:
compiz --replace
I have found somewhere this command prepended by 'setsid ', but don't
know if it changes anything.

0) Switch to VT1 using Ctrl + Alt + F1, logged in
1) killall light-locker
2) killall gnome-screensaver
3) killall /usr/lib/unity/unity-panel-service
4) /usr/lib/unity
