I did a fresh 14.04 install on my mothers computer, and we get this same
error.
There are almost 20 duplicates of this bug...

This screen capture shows the latest behavior. Note that it does the
same thing whether I log in "Greg" or the "Guest" account, ruling out
something specific to the users /home

The behavior has changed slightly. Now instead of getting a tiled (and
hung) background, the system just boots me back to the login prompt
after trying to do something for about 1 second.

Same here with 15.04 (as well as previous releases for at least a few
years; I tend to update every six months).
Running two screens with an older NVidia nvs280 (or 285), and now three
screens at work with a radeon. So not a chipset issue.

I'm having the same issue on my dell xps 13 9343 running ubuntu 14.04 upgrade
to kernel 3.19 to fix some of the other small issues.
Laptop display at 1920 x 1080 and HP 20" display through the display port DVI
