My computer has an Intel i3 processor and no other inbuilt GPU. However,
the nvidia-* latest got installed on the computer during an update
process.
I used sudo apt-get remove nvidia-* to remove all the nvidia related
contents.
Post this event, the unity-desktop has stopped
I had this problem when I came back from lunch today. I am running a
desktop with two DisplayPort monitors. I was able to move the cursor
from monitor to monitor but no prompt appeared to allow me to enter my
password. I had to go into a text console to reboot. I had a VM
running which got abor
Thank you for the support. I just tried that and it did not solve the
issue. However, I noticed that the issue only happens if the application
are setting on my 2nd external monitor. If i leave them in the primary
monitor then the described behavior does not happen.

I was able to install compiz-core-dbgsym=1:0.9.12+14.10.20140918-0ubuntu1 and
have been trying to do
sudo gdb `pidof compiz`
but it gives me (2380 is the pid of compiz):
2380: File or directory not found
(gdb) bt full
No stack.

After a bit looking I found out that the lock screen would work OK if I werent
downloading anything with firefox.
When I download bigger file with firefox and left my PC to locks, then the
launcher and panel shows up on lock screen.

It happend to me just now, using Ubuntu 14.04LTS.
I left my PC for 10 minutes, and when I got back screen was black. I moved my
mouse and screen become active and it displayed Ubuntu lock screen with my
laucnher, panel and desktop showing also.
Same thing is when I lock PC myself.

The behaviour you are describing is exactly what I would expect if the
Compiz sticky window matching rule included "class=firefox".
Please install the compizconfig-settings-manager package and run the
ccsm program. Under the "Window Management" category, make sure the
"Window Rules" plugin is unc

Ubintu 14.04 & compiz, locks just on one monitor one workspace, randomly.
Then i cant click on any opened windows, if they are in focus i can move them
to another workspace and then work with them.
