I had this too.
I did an "apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" + delete
/home/user/.config/dconf/user
restart + Desktop was back. All other things didn't help.

Dear Unity developers, please make it possible to ungroup same windows
or applications on unity launcher.
Rapid switching between same applications would be much less painful if
there was such option. That’s far more important than asking if users
want a “Show workspace” icon
It's a usability issue that doesn't limit the functionality of a core
