This problem seems to now be resolved by two circumstances, at least for
me as a Canadian user:
1. Amazon Canada now provides access to the kindle store, so there isn't as
much need to visit Amazon.com
2. the app now (in 13.10) takes me to amazon.com
So it may be ok to mark this as "fix released

I was also affected by the bug and tried installing the proposed -
gnome-settings-daemon (3.8.5-0ubuntu11.1).

while navigating menus on gimp and thunderbird for 60 seconds and I
observed on average over 60 seconds:
about 53 minor page faults per second,
nearly 1900 context switches a second,

I think it simply has to do with all applications that use/have many
menus...

I use a Dell XPS 13 laptop which I connect to an external 1920x1200 dpi
