So this is my final analysis:
The sound indicator has two parts: there is the part which gets loaded
to the panel and displays the icons and menus, and then there is the
dbus service which coordinates between the indicator and all the audio
players. Both these parts exist in both the gtk2 and gtk3

At random times, and very, very often (I haven't found out what triggers
it), the Launcher stops showing up. That is, you move the mouse all the
way to the left of the screen and the Launcher doesn't show up. You
retry and retry but it won't show up.

The patches in 12.04 were only for Unity-2D. The patches I had for Unity(-3D)
were preliminary (libnux only), so they would have required some more work to
be used with 12.04. I don't think they will apply to current versions of Unity
without significant changes.

Maybe we don't need Unity Global Menu anymore.
Just get classic menu back, by removing appmenu
sudo apt-get autoremove appmenu-gtk appmenu-gtk3 appmenu-qt
Done. Get back to what we used to be.
