One more remark: I've only observed the effect when the OpenGL 3.1 compositing
backend in kwin is active.
I tested with OpenGL 2 backend over the last week and have not seen this

Since the weekend, I ran kwin without compositing.
Since then, I haven't seen this happening, so I think this is a bug that is
triggered by kwin when compositing, likely since 4.7.0.
