The need to manually configure drirc to use driver=dri2 is filed as bug 34401.
I'm still not sure if toggling vsync on/off inside an application is supposed
to work (it doesn't seem

vline waits for non-pageflipped swap buffers can be disabled in both radeon and
intel with:
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "False"
in the device section of your xorg.conf
