I made many tests last days with my Thinkpad T60 (Radeon Mobility X1400). Such
as many reboots with ac-adapter and on battery only. Heavy cpu load for an hour
and normal working the system

I've spoken too soon, patch of comment #11 did NOT fix the problem. After at
least 10 reboots without any problems, today the flickering is back.
Now I'm back with patch of comment #8
