You could replace the imap or pop3 helper program with a wrapper that first
sends the fetchmail daemon a wakeup signal, waits a few secs and then calls
the original.

l always use it just for the much cleaner logs.
For whatever it is worth, we use imapproxy, because it allows us to use
one-time passwords for webmail users. One login, not many.

nice to have. We have some customers who like to keep their mail data
forever, and compressing on the fly would be much nicer than a nightly cron
job. :)

is a size issue: Normally, the mail is held in memory. However, if it
hits some hard coded size limit (128KB?), the mail is saved into /tmp. I have
hit the same problem with my RSBAC settings and looked it up in the code.
